INTERVIEW: English Duo APRE
APRE is an English, modernist pop and alternative duo made up of multi-instrumentalists Charlie Brown (yes, that’s really his name) and Jules Konieczny. The duo has become part of the rising musicians in the UK music scene, but APRE’s sound stands out against the noise. Their music is accentuated by a quiet character and charisma, and their lyricism is arguably strengthened by the fact that the two members do all of their song-writing and producing together.
They released their debut single, “All Yours”, in April of 2018, and they haven’t slowed down. Their first EP, The Movement of Time, was released soon after in May of 2018, followed by the release of their second EP, Drum Machines Killed Music, in September of 2018.
2019 was just as busy. APRE released their third and fourth EP’s, Everyone’s Commute and The Guns Down EP, in March and November respectively. Their single "Come Down," off of The Guns Down EP, was featured on the 2019 FIFA soundtrack, so you just might know their music without realizing it.
As far as songwriting goes, what do you draw inspiration from?
Purely eachother! Obviously subconsciously our music tastes creep in but ever since we started writing together we have never set out to write a song that sounds like this or sounds like that, this is probably why all our songs sound pretty different.
The music you guys create is very modernist pop, but the guitar clearly has a hefty influence on your music; what guitarists and musicians have influenced you?
I wouldn’t say that particular musicians have influenced our use of guitar, more that Charlie and I both have a love for that late-2000s indie music like Bombay Bicycle Club and Foals.
You’ve already done one headline tour, how does it feel to be touring all over the UK in February for the second time around?
It’s going to be very surreal, we have never been more excited for a tour! We have played so many support shows in the last year that it will be an amazing feeling to step out onto this stages and play to our own audience.
We have a new song called ‘Anything’ that I’m very excited about, but that’s out already, probably ‘Come Down’ too! Still the most fun to play live.
Can we expect new music coming this year?
Of course, lots.
Lastly, if you were stranded on an island with a record player and could only choose one album to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I would pick ‘In Rainbows’ by Radiohead. Charlie would pick ‘Total Life Forever’ by Foals.
There you have it, friends. Loads of new music coming soon, and if you're anywhere in the UK, you can catch Charlie and Jules live on tour in February.
Until then, you can keep up with them on Instagram @apre and on Spotify @apre.

Between releasing so much music and touring nearly nonstop, it’s a wonder that the guys from APRE have time to do anything else; yet, they took the time to chat with me about their music, touring, and what we can expect from them next. As far as songwriting goes, what do you draw inspiration from?
Purely eachother! Obviously subconsciously our music tastes creep in but ever since we started writing together we have never set out to write a song that sounds like this or sounds like that, this is probably why all our songs sound pretty different.
