The Unlikely Candidates Are Likely to Be Your New Favorite Band
The Unlikely Candidates formed back in 2008, so why are we only hearing about them now?
The 5 piece rock band formed in Fort Worth, Texas and consists of lead singer, Kyle Morris, lead guitarist Brenton Carney, guitarist Cole Male, drummer Kevin Goddard, and bassist Jared Hornbeek. After forming, the band dissociated themselves from the traditional musical styles that are commonly associated with Texas, and instead went the alternative, indie-rock route.
Like more and more bands recently, The Unlikely Candidates hit most of their struggle with their original label, Atlantic Records. The band was producing plenty of music, much of which they had a desire to release, but simply could not get the go-ahead from Atlantic. Because of this, The Unlikely Candidates left Atlantic after three years with the label, and switched over to Another Century, a smaller label owned by Sony, in late 2016. After the switch, the band acquired far more creative freedom than they ever had at their previous label, and began working on music that they actually wanted to produce.
The result? The Bed of Liars and Danger to Myself EPs.
With the freedom to produce the music that they want to, The Unlikely Candidates don't seem to be slowing down any time soon. That being said, their recent success doesn’t come without a price; the band has been active for more than a decade, and has toured with acts such as Young the Giant, The Goo Goo Dolls, and Fall Out Boy. Similar to their own musical success, it seems fitting that their single, “Novocaine” is finally gaining the attention it deserves months after it was released.
So, what are the Unlikely Candidates up to now?
After touring relentlessly throughout 2019, they took a short break over the holidays, and are back to the grind and playing shows throughout the month of January. Fingers crossed that they have some new music in the works, too.

The band released their debut EP, Follow My Feet, in 2013, and released two extended plays, Bed of Liars and Danger to Myself, both in 2017. Both of the extended plays had moderate success, but it’s really been with the release of their most recent single, “Novocaine” that they have blown up across the internet. The “Novocaine” music video currently has over 13 million views on YouTube, the song itself has amassed more than that in streams across various streaming platforms, and is in the top 10 at Alternative Radio.
