The World's Obsession with Måneskin

If you don’t know who Måneskin is by now, I’m going to assume it’s because you’ve been living under a rock.

For those of you who don’t know, Måneskin is an Italian rock band made up of Damiano David (vocals), Victoria De Angelis (bass), Thomas Raggi (guitar), and Ethan Torchio (drums). They rose to prominence in Italy after competing on the Italian X Factor in 2016 (they actually came in second place, but many people think they won.) More recently, they have exploded across the international music scene after they won the Sanremo Music Festival 2021 in Italy, and more importantly, the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 as the Italian representatives with their song, “ZITTI E BUONI" (English translation: "Shut Up and Be Quiet").

Måneskin’s Eurovision performance exploded overnight and earned them more than 100 million streams on “ZITTI E BUONI” since the competition.

Let’s fast-forward to the present moment: TikTok and Gen Z are in love with Måneskin, (pronounced mon-eh-skin, means “moonlight” in Danish, and pays tribute to De Angelis’ Danish heritage), and the reason why isn’t hard to discern.

All of the members of the band are young, David is 22, De Angelis is 21, and Raggi and Torchio are both 20, which inherently makes them appealing to people within that age bracket. Måneskin’s “look” is also a carefully curated mix of androgyny, complete with long hair, black nail polish, tattoos, and high heels.

In that respect, Gen Z loves Måneskin for the same reason we love Harry Styles.

Their style is nearly as important to maintaining their prominence on the international music scene as their sound is ― because to a certain extent, that’s what rock is ― it’s all image, grit, and sexiness.

Italy has never really had any rock bands that became mainstream ― until now.

Their win at Eurovision was unexpected, but didn’t come without scandal. After a video surfaced of David with his head bent downwards towards a table, claims of cocaine-usage exploded. The band denied all claims of drug usage and David tested negative for drug usage upon returning to Italy.

In an interview with Variety, David said that the allegations were “a personal attack.” He said, “If someone had said that my performance sucked, I would have accepted it. But in any event, I obviously wasn’t worried about it, even for a second ― I know the truth and we’ve also provided proof that it was false.”

So, where do they go from here?

Touring is the plan. They’ve got a tour planned for Italy later on this year, and plan to tour more extensively next year. In the same interview with Variety, De Angelis said that, “we are trying to figure out our next moves. A lot of doors are opening that we didn’t even dream of considering possible before.”
