Bands to Know: The New Twentys
Bike Shorts. Synthesizers. Puff Sleeves. There are countless trends from the 1980s that have been making a comeback in the past year, and that includes music. I mean, have you seen Miley Cyrus’ iconic cover of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass?” This isn’t the first time that the 80s sound has reared its nostalgic head in modern pop.
The New Twentys are a three piece made up of brothers Jimmy (vocals) and Harry Morris (lead guitar), and Chris Bourne (bass). The Morris brothers are originally from South London, while Bourne is from Southend on Sea. Their origins have undoubtedly influenced their sound, but they differ from the other bands that have come out of the London and Southend scene in recent years.
The band’s new wave/post-punk sound is heavily influenced by 1980s bands, including The Talking Heads, The Clash, and New Order, with the undeniable touch of the big music stars of that time period as well, including David Bowie and Prince.
Their latest release, “Dancing on a Sunday” is written about a young gay boy who grows up in an uber-religious household and how that negatively affects his upbringing. While the song focuses on a more serious topic, it also channels the classic new wave sound with the band's own indie-pop twist.
The band's previous release was "The Way," which was a love song at its core, but differed from the band's previous releases. Rather than being laced with a layer of cynicism, like their previous love songs, “The Way” is wholly positive and discusses what it’s like to be completely infatuated with someone. The song is meant to channel the summer vibes akin to driving with all of your windows down and letting the wind blow your hair in every which direction.
In November of last year, the band decided to release a new track every six weeks, so that has kept them busy during the last few months of lockdown and has provided us with tons of new music from them.
The New Twentys’ debut EP is already mixed, mastered, and ready to be released, so we will undoubtedly be hearing more from them in the coming months.
For the remainder of 2021, their plans are to play as many shows as safely possible.

The band said that comedian Jimmy Carr actually inspired the concept of the song, and if you listen closely, you can hear them saying his name in the middle of the song!
