Reasons to Love 'Ripe'

Nowadays, it’s rare to find a band that is comprised of more than four, possibly five, members.

Make way for Ripe, the 7-piece groovy group that hails from Boston, Massachusetts.

The group got their start at Berklee College of Music, and currently consists of seven members: Robbie Wulfsohn on Vocals, Tory Geismar and Jon Becker on Guitars, Nadav Shapira on Bass, Sampson Hellerman on Drums, Josh Shpak on Trumpet, and Calvin Barthel on Trombone.

Ripe has released two EPs and an album since they’ve been together. Their first EP, Produce the Juice, was released in 2013, followed by Hey Hello in 2015. Following the release of their EPs, they released a 5 track record, appropriately titled Ripe on Audiotree Live, from their performance at the popular music label Audiotree in 2016. In 2018, however, Ripe finally released their first full-length album, titled Joy in the Wild Unknown.

What makes the group unique is how long they’ve been in the business, they formed in 2011, yet their discography is rather sparse. The release of their 2018 album definitely changed that and effectively propelled Ripe into the mainstream, public eye. It’s not unusual for bands and groups to go undiscovered by the majority of people for a long time, but the rapid success that Ripe has experienced comes as a once in a million chance. But, the payoff hasn’t come without plenty of hard work.

Ripe’s sound is distinct; it’s obviously groovy, the use of brass instruments is reminiscent of the 80s, and the lyrics are resonant. Beyond that, it’s hard to nail Ripe’s music to a particular genre or style. They stand on a delicate balance of funk, jazz, soul, and pop music, but they don’t seem to dip their toes into one pool more than the other. One thing about it is for sure, it’s delicious and you will be powerless to grooving to it once it starts playing through the speakers.

Their latest release in the single, “Five in the Morning”, released on January 10, 2020. Wulfsohn's voice combined with the instrumentals is reminiscent of early, Songs About Jane style, Maroon 5, but the chorus soon explodes to achieve a level of groove that makes you want to dance to it, regardless of where you are and who's watching. The official lyric video for the song is below.

Ripe is also going on tour throughout the US now through early April. Click here to see dates available on their website.
