INTERVIEW: Abandon Ship!

Abandon Ship! is an indie four-piece band born out of Hampshire, UK and made up of Luke Burywood (lead vocals, guitar), Jordan Baggs (lead guitar, backing vocals), Clayton Deacon (bass, backing vocals), and Martin Sylvester (drums).

If you were to try and fit Abandon Ship! into one genre, you’d find it nearly impossible. According to their website, they draw inspiration from “Foals, the 1975 and Japanese House, while absorbing influences as diverse as Death Cab for Cutie, Sticky Fingers, American Football and PUP”.

The result? An eclectic blend of indie rock with emo influences, and an undeniable sense of rawness.

Abandon Ship! recently released their debut EP Wrong Again in February, which was self-produced and mastered by Robin Schmidt, who has worked with some of their influences such as The 1975 and Blur.

I had the privilege of asking Abandon Ship!’s lead singer Luke a couple of questions, and here’s what he had to say!

Your website claims that, “Abandon Ship! are determined not to place limits around their emerging sound”. How does it feel to be a genre-bending band and work outside of the box?
I guess it feels...normal. We haven't set out to fit into a particular style or anything like that so there's elements of a lot of the music we listen to in our stuff. We're super into bands like Twenty One Pilots and The 1975 both of whom are not limited by genre which is probably where that comes from. We saw them both at Reading Festival last year and they were both mad decent live.

You guys have an interesting blend of musical influences, from indie to emo to britpop; how has your sound been affected by your physical surroundings in the UK?
As in like the consistently miserable weather that we're faced with in the UK? We're from a town called Basingstoke which is about 40 mins outside of London. It's a bit of a bleak place, not much really goes on here. There's a lot of good people that live here, but as a town it's literally most famous for the amount of roundabouts it has. I think these days with the internet it's not that much of a factor in terms of how it affects our sound as you have access to pretty much all the music ever 100% of the time, but if we were around like 20 years earlier it would for sure affect us.

My favorite song of yours is “Better Days”; do you each have a favorite song you’ve produced?

Say The Word is probably my favourite production wise, just because there's a lot of synths and suchlike going on and it was the first track we produced/wrote which featured that kind of stuff. Lyrically my favourite is Better Days.

Do you guys have plans to play shows in the US soon? (This question is more for me because I’d really like to see you guys live!)
Haha one day! It's still pretty early days for us as a band (we haven't even done a proper tour of the UK yet). But we will definitely go to the US someday. What's your nearest venue? We'll make sure we stop off there ;)

You guys just released your debut EP ‘Wrong Again’, and it’s spectacular. Can we expect more new music later this year?
Thanks for the kind words Abby, stoked you like it! 100% there'll be more music this year. I don't know what yet/how many songs but we're always working on new music. We have this tune 'Get Blazed' which we're gonna drop when it's sunny.

Lastly, if you were stranded on an island with a record player and could only choose one album to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning by Bright Eyes.

Big things coming for this English four piece, check out their music so you can say you were a fan before they were famous! ;)
