grandson Revolutionizes Election Season

Canadian artist Jordan Edward Benjamin, better known as grandson, is mobilizing the masses this election season. The fact that 2020 is an election year has been lost amid the flood of media surrounding the coronavirus. grandson is ensuring that the masses don’t forget the importance of voting.

You might recognize him from songs like “Blood // Water”, which combines a gritty guitar sound with Kanye-like influences, or “Apologize”, which houses the same kind of genre-fluid grit.

Recently he’s launched the XX Why campaign, in which he will be releasing an acoustic collaboration each month leading up to the 2020 election. Each song is accompanied by a podcast episode, which can be found at xxresistance.org/why. Each podcast episode features the same artist who collaborated on that month’s song with him; there, they discuss things that are meaningful to them, whether it be their personal influences, or the state of the political world.

In early March, grandson released the first song of his XX Why campaign with the release of “Peaches” featuring K. Flay. The song is optimistic, with the two musicians singing, “We'll pick up all of the pieces/ We'll turn the pain into peaches”, signifying a positive change.

DREAMERS lent their musical talents for the March release of “Whole Lotta”, which perfectly exemplifies the feeling of heartbreak and the acceptance of a breakup. grandson sings, “I still got a whole lotta love for you/ don’t you think a piece of me is still a piece of you.”

His most recent song release was “How Bout Now” featuring the indie musician phem. The song depicts the frustration with a lack of change in society and the urge to do something, without knowing what. It also illustrates the hope that one day things will be better, hopefully sooner rather than later.

You may notice that the suffix of each song ends with “(Text Voter XX to 40649)”, which encourages listeners to vote. Once you text the number, you’ll receive information on how to vote based on where you live (you’re also automatically entered to win a Epiphone guitar, which is also pretty cool).

In conjunction with XX Why, grandson also founded XX Resistance, which according to his website,
XX Resistance is a movement founded by grandson that serves to empower youth and connect passionate people with ways to get involved in the progressive causes they care about. Through events, collaboration with charities and organizations across the world, and brand partnerships, XX Resistance will empower people to participate in the fight for social good.
Further, a portion of all of his merch sales also go to the XX Resistance fund.

grandson uses his name as a part of his campaign to remind us that it’s our responsibility to vote in order to secure a better future for our own grandchildren. If we want a better world, we cannot simply sit back and wait for it to come to us, we need to be active in our pursuit of it.
