Southern California's 'Sitting on Stacy' Brings Back Surfer Rock
Sitting on Stacy (previously known as Paper) is a three-piece band from San Diego, California. Made up of Hoyt Yeatman (lead vocals and guitar), Kyle Hart (vocals and bass), and Leland Schenck (drums), the band primarily creates music of the punk, alternative, ska, and surfer rock genres.
I discovered them one afternoon when I was scrolling through TikTok (don’t judge me). A video of a girl dancing came across my “For You” page, and the audio was that of these three guys performing a cover of Sugar Ray’s “Every Morning”.
It was freakin’ awesome.
It sounded enough like the original to be super recognizable, but these three put their own surfer-rock spin on it. Other artists performing Sugar Ray covers from here on out, take notes. Naturally, I did some research. The band released their second album “Perfectly Sane”, in August of 2019. The album features songs such as “Chest Hair” which personally makes me want to hop in my car, roll all of the windows down, and drive along the Pacific Ocean… even though I live on the East Coast.
According to their Facebook page, Hoyt and Kyle are currently studying at San Diego State University. Hoyt is obtaining a BS in Business Administration and minoring in Music, while Kyle is getting a BA in Communications. Leland is nearly as busy, dedicating his time to practicing the drums.
The band was once originally known as “Paper”, but the guys soon found that “Paper” was not easily searchable in an era where the internet is so integral in broadcasting music to fans. As for the currently obscure name of their band, their Facebook page claims that Hoyt had a dream one night that the band’s name was “Sitting on Stacy”, and the experience was unusual and humorous enough that it ended up sticking.
You can keep up with the band on their Instagram, @sittingonstacy , on Spotify, and on their official website.
