Miley Cyrus Channels Stevie Nicks in New Song, Midnight Sky
It seems as though Miley Cyrus reinvents herself with each album she releases, and we should be considered lucky to be able to view the progression of her musical career from the sidelines. After flirting with the rock genre for the past few years, (see: her live cover of “Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in 2019 or her cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Head Like a Hole” from her Black Mirror episode in 2019), she has yet to really release any music of her own that could fit comfortably within the category.

She’s always had the rasp and the range within her voice to play with the natural soul of rock ‘n’ roll, but her public image hasn’t always been content with letting her explore whatever kind of music she wishes.
Until now, that is.
If you miss the sound of late-80s Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks’ solo work, then the direction in which Miley is heading is probably perfect for you.
In reference to her very publicized romantic life, Miley sings, “I was born to run / I don’t belong to anyone”, brashly showcasing her newfound independence after breaking things off with her longtime boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth. She also sings, “See my lips on her mouth / Everybody’s talking now”, in reference to her brief, highly public relationship with Kaitlynn Carter last year.
The song is also accompanied by a candy-colored music video that Miley directed herself, you can watch it below.
